PUBLIC LECTURE

Making Music with Maths

Dr Michael Bulmer

7PM
Thursday 6 July 2006
(light supper at 8pm)

Room 222
Parnell Building Lecture Theatre
Building 7
(see map)

The University of Queensland, St Lucia Campus

Music and mathematics go hand-in-hand. In this easy-to-understand public lecture Dr Bulmer will show a mathematical approach for analysing the structure of music and what makes it worth listening to. Using mathematical principles of fractal noise, he will start with the fractal images that have become a modern form of art and also show fractal patterns in time. This analysis will then be turned around to compose some mathematical music. Along the way we'll also learn the fundamental statistical principle that has revolutionized science and technology over the last one hundred years.

Dr Michael Bulmer
Senior Lecturer in Mathematics and Statistics,
University of Queensland, Australia

Dr Michael Bulmer spent his early life in Hobart, obtaining his PhD from the University of Tasmania in 1996. Since 1997 he has been at the University of Queensland where he is currently a Senior Lecturer in mathematics and statistics in the School of Physical Sciences. In addition to research interests in computational methods in optimisation and statistical modelling, Dr Bulmer has a passion for mathematics education. He has been a vice-president of the Queensland Association of Mathematics Teachers since 2001 and last year won an Australian Award for University Teaching in recognition of his work in promoting student learning. His other interests include calendar systems and chasing waterfalls.
