Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How much does it cost to register?

A. $A132 for participants from AMSI institutions; $A660 for all others. This covers participation in one of the three themes, consisting of two (and in one case, three) courses. It is not possible to take more than one theme, as they will be run simultaneously.

Q. Who is eligible for travel and accommodation support?

A. Any full-time student from an AMSI institution and living outside the Brisbane metropolitan area is encouraged to apply for travel and accommodation subsidies. In addition, there are travel and accommodation subsidies for students and early career academics enrolled or employed in Asian and Latin American universities, and accommodation subsidies for students from Pacific Rim Mathematical Association (PRIMA) member universities.

Q. Am I an AMSI student?

A. The term "AMSI student" means anyone who is enrolled as an postgraduate student at an AMSI Institution during first semester 2006, or will commence enrolment in second semester 2006. Your application can be endorsed by your current supervisor or Head of Department. Other circumstances which lead you to believe that you should qualify as an AMSI student will be considered on a case by case basis.

Q. Will the courses have assessment?

A. No, Graduate School courses will not be assessed. However, all participants are required to give a seminar about research they have undertaken recently or are carrying out at present.

Q. Am I guaranteed of getting into my first choice of course?

A. No, but every effort will be made to accommodate your choice. Where necessary, preference will be given on the basis of early application and academic merit. The final decision on course placements is at the discretion of the organisers.

Q. I am a staff member in an Australian university - am I able to attend?

A. Yes, but no accommodation or travel support can be provided. Registration for staff from AMSI institutions is $132 and from non-AMSI institutions is $660. Where places in a course are becoming filled, staff applicants will be given the lowest priority.

Q.
I am a staff member from a university outside Australia – am I able to attend?

A.
Yes, university staff are able to attend. The registration fee is $A660. However, if you are in your first few years of teaching at an Asian or Latin American university, you are eligible to apply for a travel and accommodation subsidy. See details on the International Students page.

Q. I am not an AMSI student - can you make an accommodation booking for me?

A. Yes, we will be happy to make the booking for you, and in fact we encourage all participants to stay together where possible.

Q. I live in Brisbane - can I get free accommodation during the Graduate School?

A. No, the accommodation support is only available for students from outside the Brisbane metropolitan area. However, provided you attend an AMSI institution, the registration fee is only $132.

Q.
I am still an honours student – am I able to attend?

A.
Priority will go to postgraduate students undertaking doctoral or master’s level research. However, outstanding honours students doing research in any of the three themes are welcome to apply, and will be considered if there are places available.

Q. I am not a postgraduate student or university staff member - am I able to attend?

A. Yes. If you are from an AMSI institution such as the Australian Bureau of Statistics or CSIRO, registration is $132. From a non-AMSI institution, registration is $660.

Q. What aspects of the school will be recorded?

A. Only one stream will be recorded on video, but photographs will be taken throughout the three week period. These will be used for educational and promotional purposes.

Q. Will the Graduate School be offered again if I can't attend this year?

A. Yes. It will be held again in 2007 at the University of Queensland. However, the themes for next year will change.
