Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How much does it cost to register?
A. $110 for participants from AMSI institutions; $550 for all others. This covers participation in one of the three themes, consisting of two courses. It is not possible to take more than one theme, as they will be run simultaneously.
Q. Who is eligible for travel and accommodation support?
A. Any full-time student from an AMSI institution and living outside the Brisbane metropolitan area is encouraged to apply for travel and accommodation subsidies. In addition, there are two tuition and accommodation subsidies for students and early career academics enrolled or employed in Asian universities.
Q. Am I an AMSI student?
A. The term "AMSI student" means anyone who will be enrolled as an Honours or graduate student at an AMSI Institution during first semester 2005. Your application can be endorsed by your current supervisor or Head of Department, but if he or she is not from the relevant institution then some other evidence of your enrolment may be required. Other circumstances which lead you to believe that you should qualify as an AMSI student will be considered on a case by case basis.
Q. Will the courses have assessment?
A. Assessment will be offered for each course and you will need to inform the course organisers if you intend to take the course for assessment. Assessment will only be compulsory for those students taking a course as credit towards their degree. (Contact your Head of Department or Honours coordinator for guidance as to whether this will be possible at your home university.)
Q. Am I guaranteed of getting into my first choice of course?
A. No, but every effort will be made to accommodate your choice. Where necessary, preference will be given on the basis of academic merit. The final decision on course placements is at the discretion of the organisers.
Q. I am a university staff member - am I able to attend?
A. Yes, but no accommodation or travel support can be provided. Registration for staff from AMSI institutions is $110 and from non-AMSI institutions is $550. Where places in a course are becoming filled, staff applicants will be given the lowest priority.
Q. I am not an AMSI student - can you make an accommodation booking for me?
A. Yes, we will be happy to make the booking for you, and in fact we encourage all participants to stay together where possible.
Q. I live in Brisbane - can I get free accommodation during the Graduate School?
A. No, the accommodation support is only available for students from outside the Brisbane metropolitan area. However, provided you attend an AMSI institution, the registration fee is only $110.
Q. I am not an Honours student, graduate student or university staff member - am I able to attend?
A. Yes. If you are from an AMSI institution such as the Australian Bureau of Statistics or CSIRO, registration is $110. From a non-AMSI institution, registration is $550.
Q. What aspects of the school will be recorded?
A. Only the lectures in Stochastic Processes will be recorded on video, but photographs will be taken throughout the three week period.
Q. Will the Graduate School be offered again if I can't attend this year?
A. Yes. It will be held from 3-21 July 2006, again at the University of Queensland. However, the themes for next year will change.
