PhD Scholarships tenable at the University of Queensland

[MASCOS Qld PhD Scholarships Poster]

[It will save everyone a lot of time if candidates would please note the special conditions detailed below]

MASCOS offers PhD scholarships for PhD students attached to the Centre. There are two kinds:

  • Full scholarships, carrying a stipend of $27,000 per annum for a maximum of three years, and a maintenance fund of $3,000 per annum to be used for study-related expenses. Only a limited number are available.
  • Top-up scholarships, which are awarded on top of another scholarship to increase the total stipend to $27,000 per annum for a maximum of three years, and a maintenance fund of $3,000 per annum to be used for study-related expenses.

MASCOS PhD Scholarships do not cover tuition fees for International Students (Australian citizens and Australian residents do not pay tuition fees). It is anticipated that several scholarships will be available for students commencing in 2008 and 2009. Existing University of Queensland PhD students may also apply, for top-ups (only), provided that they are early in their candidature and they can document substantial progress.

Applicants should be highly motivated, mathematically literate, and have a clear idea of their goals and ambitions.

Note. Top-up scholarships are generally awarded routinely to new students who are successful in the most recent APA, UQRS, UQMYS or IPRS round (see below) or hold any other scholarship providing equivalent financial support for at least three years. Full scholarships are most often awarded to candidates who were competitive for an APA, UQRS or IPRS award, but just missed out. Full scholarships are occasionally awarded to candidates who can demonstrate a substantial research record, yet are eligible to be admitted as PhD candidates.

Supervision. Successful candidates would usually work under the supervision of Prof. Phil Pollett, or one of the full-time Centre research staff. The following specific projects are currently available:

  • Estimating Persistence in Populations that are Subject to Catastrophes
  • Models for Spatially Structured Metapopulations
  • Stochastic Models for Epidemics in Population Networks
(More detailed descriptions of some of these projects are available.)  Or, candidates may wish to pursue a suitable project of their own choice.

Alternatively, candidates may arrange to be supervised jointly with another member of staff, provided that:

  1. their work is cognate to one of the four themes of the Centre (Complex Networks, Critical Phenomena, Dynamical Systems, Risk Analysis)
  2. their Principal Advisor is a member of the Discipline of Mathematics,
  3. their Principal Advisor is happy for them to hold a MASCOS PhD Scholarship, and thus be wholely associated with the Centre of Excellence, and to take part in MASCOS activities and events.

In such cases, Prof. Pollett, or one of the full-time Centre Research staff, shall be appointed as joint Principal Advisor (that is, Associate Advisor with supervision load equal to that of the named Principal Advisor— usually 50%). All publications, patents, et cetera, derived from the student's candidature, will be included the Centre's annual reports.

Conditions of award. The following conditions apply to MASCOS PhD scholarships, and are additional to the General Conditions of Award of UQ Research Scholarships:

  • Candidates must be enrolled 100% in the School of Physical Sciences (fractional enrolment with another school is not permitted).
  • In all published papers, posters, abstracts, talks, patents, et cetera, derived from their candidature, PhD scholars shall acknowledge the support of ARC Centre of Excellence for Mathematics and Statistics of Complex Systems, and all shall be reported to the Director. All posters shall bear the MASCOS Logo.
  • PhD scholars shall take part in the local MASCOS meetings (usually fortnightly).
  • PhD scholars shall play an active role in national and local MASCOS events.
  • Scholarships shall be offered on a yearly basis with renewal subject to satisfactory research progress and involvement in MASCOS activities and events.
  • Scholarships cannot be held beyond three years full-time candidature.

Application procedure. Applicants should send one hard copy of each of (i) a full curriculum vitae, (ii) a brief covering letter and (iii) the names and contact details of two referees (e-mail addresses are essential) by normal mail to:

   Prof. Phil Pollett
   ARC Centre of Excellence for
Mathematics and Statistics of Complex Systems
   Discipline of Mathematics
   The University of Queensland
   Queensland 4072
   AUSTRALIA

(Do not ask referees to send their references directly, and do not include open references or testimonials with your application. We will contact referees.)  For current UQ students, one referee must be their Principal Advisor.

Special conditions. Candidates must apply separately for, or hold, a local scholarship or international scholarship:

  • Candidates who are Australian or New Zealand citizens, or permanent residents of Australia, should apply for either an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA), a UQ Research Scholarships (UQRS), a UQ Mid Year Scholarship (UQMYS), or some other equivalent award.
  • Candidates who are not Australian or New Zealand citizens, nor permanent residents of Australia (International Students), should apply for an International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS) together with a University of Queensland International Research Tuition Award (UQIRTA) (closing date: 15 September at the School). Competition for these scholarships is fierce, and are generally only awarded to applicants who have a first division or first class honours degree completed at a very high level, with publications in international refereed journals and excellent referees' reports. There are also English language requirements to be met.
Please refer to the Graduate School website for details on how to apply for these, and other scholarships.

Closing date for MASCOS PhD Scholarships. Candidates may apply at any time. However, candidates should note the special conditions above and the closing dates for APA, IPRS, et cetera.
