SAFE DIVING

You and your group have decided to organise a scuba diving holiday. You all have different interests and like to dive at different depths and Jervis bay offers plenty of variety. From the website below, each member of your group should choose a different site to dive at, keeping in mind that there should be variety in depth levels and the time spent under water.

You will need to investigate the hazards of oxygen toxicity and decompression sickness. For each dive site, consider the following questions:

  1. Which of the following is the most appropriate choice: compressed air, nitrox (nitrogen/oxygen mix) or helium/oxygen mix?
  2. How much time will be spent under water and at what depth?
  3. Determine the time needed to safely return to the surface. On the side of caution it is suggested that you calculate your assent time assuming that you spent all your time at your maximum depth. However you should also compare this with a calculation based on time spent at varying depths.
