Instructions for Tutors on how to run the student poster presentations

in the tutorial class

When you arrive to your tutorial, organise the order in which the groups will make the presentations and decide who peer assesses who.  Be sure to write it on the blackboard/OHP.

Also write the categories for the peer assessment on the board so that groups that don't have copies of the sheet can still make notes.

Each group will have a maximum of 3 minutes - so tell the class that you will warn them to wrap up the presentation at the 2min 30sec mark.  For the tutorial classes of 26 students, make sure you stop the presentation on 3 minutes or you will run out of time. You can do this by initially standing up near the presenters, and then if this doesn’t work you may have to just politely interrupt them.

Time permitting, give an opportunity for the class to ask questions of the group presenting.  It is desirable to encourage a short class discussion on each presentation.

Please take along the assessment criteria to your tutorial - jot down notes during each presentation on which you can base your comments.  Make sure you have multiple copies of the project descriptions to hand out for peer assessment.

You will also have to mark who is present in the tutorial – not all the members of each group will necessarily show up for the presentations!

At the end of each group presentation encourage an applause, and make some nice encouraging comments to the group about their presentation, then also mention some areas that could have been improved.  This is the only opportunity that each group will have to receive your feedback as tutor on their poster, so it is important to comment on their research and work – they appreciate your opinion.

Pass the poster just presented to the group peer assessing it so that they can read over the poster and complete the peer assessment form adequately.  The tutor should ensure that the group peer assessing has the corresponding project description in front of them.  The peer assessors should then take the handwritten version home and type it up to be handed in by the due date.  The group peer assessing may want to briefly discuss the poster outside the class.  However, the tutor should ensure that they return after one presentation.

Each tutorial class chooses the best poster, approved by the Tutor.  These will be displayed in the math’s building and a prize will be awarded by the Mathematics Student Society to the overall best poster of the semester which will then be posted outside the Mathematics Staff room.
