A quote from Pirandello's Six Characters in Search of an Author (1921):

| Here we have the cause of all the trouble! Each one of us has a whole world of things inside him and each one of us has his own particular world. How can we understand each other if into the words which I speak I put the sense and the value of things as I understand them within myself, while at the same time whoever is listening to them inevitably assumes them to have the sense and value that they have for him. We think we understand one another but we never really do understand. |
