In this paper, we discuss an adaptive spatial regridding method, which is used in conjunction with the method of lines to solve the system of nonlinear diffusion-convection-reaction equations arising from contaminant transport in groundwater.

Two approaches are used namely the local uniform grid refinement and the local non-uniform one. The strategy employed is adopted from the method proposed by Trompert (1991). The adaptive regridding strategies are integrated with the ODEs solver called the VODpk.

Our numerical results show that the spatial regridding methods have significantly improved the efficiency of the PDEs solver under consideration not only the memory and space requirement, but also the computing time in general. Further more, the uniform grid refinement is generally more efficient than the non-uniform one.
