MN474  Advanced Mathematical Programming  Semester 2, 2000

Any student with a disability who may require alternative academic
arrangements in the course is encouraged to seek advice at the commencement
of the semester from a Disability Adviser at Student Support Services.

My office is coded 69-717 , on level 7 in the old Computer Science Building.  The times 2 pm to 3 pm on Tuesdays and 4 pm to 5 pm on Wednesdays are set aside for student consultation however I am usually available for help and consultation whenever I am there.  A copy of my timetable is here:

In Semester 2, 2000 the first 5 weeks of material will be posted on the web.  Follow this link for more information
Meeting times and places will be discussed on my return to Brisbane on August 14th.

The aim of the course is to present an account of state of the art algorithms in the solution of optimisation problems.  Most problems will be of the form

where is a function from  Rn  to  R

OR

where is a function from  Rn  to  R  and  c is  from  Rn to  Rm.

Objectives

At the conclusion of the course the participants will have acquired a sound theoretical knowledge of the techniques investigated, they will have an understanding of the problems of implementation of the algorithms.

Assessment will be based on assignment problems to be handed in regularly, an extended assignment task on implementation of algorithms or an account of theoretical aspects of the algorithms, and a 15 minute oral examination in which the fundamentals of the course material will be examined. The oral examination will be held during the second semester examination period in the presence of a staff member who will observe the conduct of the oral.

Assignments can be handed in at lectures or brought to my office.
The deadlines are:  First assignment  will be due in on  September 1st.  The second and third ans extended assignments will be due in on November 16th.
