Thank you for all your entries
to our last competition. Congratulations to the 3 winners: Sheree
Rogers of Redlynch Heights, Robert Brier of Kingaroy and Shaun Sturgess
of Rockhampton.
Last issue we launched Club Infinity;
a maths club acting as a focus for the mathematical activities run
by the Department of Maths at the University of Queensland. We have
been overwhelmed by your response! Club Infinity Packs will reach
you soon.
In issue 4 of Infinity we talked
about RSA, an encryption method widely used by banks to keep your
PIN a secret. Last month a teenager Sarah Flannery (16) developed
a brand new encryption scheme based on matrices (called Cayley-Purser
after famous mathematicians) which is faster than RSA, and just as
secure! (see http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/sci/tech/newsid_254000/254236.stm)
If you would like class sets
of Infinity or just an individual copy send us your details. Dont
forget to try this issues competition.
