University of Queensland Advanced Studies Program

In 2004, 324 of Queensland’s highest scoring (OP 1 to 3) high school students were invited to apply to the Advanced Studies Program. A quarter of all applicants were successful. In general students were selected on academic merit, communication skills (including performance at interview) and commitment to a science-based career.

Advanced Studies students have a wide variety of options and may elect to study for a Bachelor of Science (including dual degrees), a Bachelor of Agriculture, a Bachelor of Biotechnology, a Bachelor of Environmental Science or a Bachelor of Marine Studies. The members of the program are provided with an enriched program of study, incorporating subjects from mathematics, or the physical, agricultural and biological sciences.

The academic year is launched with students attending a two day field trip to UQ’s Moreton Bay Research Station. In their first year students attend an exciting seminar series where UQ’s leading research scientists discuss their cutting edge research and their view of future directions in science. Each student is individually mentored by a research scientist, and from second year onwards students are integrated into the research teams, developing important research skills and working on unsolved problems.
