ICMP '97 will be help on the campus of The University of Queensland at St Lucia, a suburb of Brisbane, the state capital of Queensland, Australia.
Brisbane is a modern, rapidly growing city with about 1 million inhabitants. It is situated on the East coast of Australia at latitude 27 S c.f. Miami, 26 N.
Although Brisbane is a tropical paradise where the summers are swelteringly hot, July is mid-winter in Brisbane, when the days are typically dry and sunny, and the nights cool to cold. July temperatures typically range from a (daytime) low of 10 C (50 F) to a high of 20 C (68 F). Bring a sweater or jacket and warm night-attire -- because of the mild climate, most buildings are not centrally heated. Bring an umbrella or light raincoat too, in case we are unlucky with the weather. A current Brisbane weather forecast may be found here.
Site of the successful World Expo '88, Brisbane provides visitors with a wide variety of tourist attractions, and a wide variety of restaurants (European, Middle-Eastern, American, Asian) reflecting Australia's multicultural society. A new casino complex has recently opened in the city centre. The city is situated about 80 kms north of the Gold Coast with its famous surf beaches, night clubs, theme parks etc., and a similar distance south of the equally spectacular beaches of the Sunshine Coast.
The University of Queensland is one of the most beautiful campuses in the Southerm Hemisphere. It situated in a loop of the Brisbane River that forms the suburb of St Lucia, about 5 kms from the centre of the City of Brisbane. It is well-served by bus and ferry transport to the City. A variety of student colleges (hostels) on the fringes of the campus provide single-room accommodation for some 2,000 of the University's 25,000 students. At the time of the Congress, the students will be on vacation.
