MATHEMATICS PROBLEM SOLVING COMPETITION

CIRCULAR & ENTRY FORM

The 2003 QAMT Problem Solving Competition is open to all Queensland high school students and entry is only $1 per student. The competition is administered by schools and several competition stations. The recommended date for the competition is the morning of Saturday 31 May, 2003; however a time between Wednesday 28 May - Monday 2 June is fine (and even greater variation may be possible).

Please complete and return the enclosed summary entry form, to reach the QAMT office not later than 17 May 2003. Note that only approximate numbers are required, not student names. You will receive a copy of the competition paper by email (or you will receive the password to enter the competition paper site to download the papers). Schools or competition centres themselves should copy the appropriate numbers of papers for the competing students.

When students have completed the competition, you should send the competition papers, along with the entry fees to the QAMT office. The papers will be marked, and results published in August at www.maths.uq.edu.au/qamt.

All papers are two hours long and consist of a mixture of multi-choice and written answers. The papers consist of problems that do not usually require any greater knowledge than that possessed by good students but will need a certain amount of ingenuity and thought for their solution. Candidates should bring their own paper (about 10 sheets should be sufficient). Calculators may be used.

Several regional centres will host the competition – visit the web site to find out the times and locations.

In the Brisbane area, the competition should normally be restricted to Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday, since question papers will be freely available after the main centres finish at midday Saturday.

The results will be posted on the competition web page - see http://www.maths.uq.edu.au/qamt. The web page also contains some previous years’ papers and solutions.

The Year 11 results are taken heavily into consideration in the choice of students to be offered places in the National Mathematics Summer School held in Canberra in January. Will you please assist by so informing promising Year 11 candidates. All Year 11 competition entrants are automatically considered for selection.

Substantial Prizes for this year will be advertised when sponsorships are finalised. There will be good prizes and cash for the winning few places in each grade. Highly Commended and Honourable Mention certificates will be awarded by the judges. About the top twenty percent of contestants in each year level will receive a certificate.

Correspondence should be addressed to the QAMT Office:
