“Random Numbers and Security”
by Jonathan Hunt
11am, Tuesday 11th November, 2008
Abstract:
Vivien
gave us and excellent introduction to (psuedo) random
number generators and their use in simulations. Random numbers (pseudo and not)
are vital for modern computer security and cryptography. I will give an
overview of how random numbers are used in this area and give a few simple
examples of how weakness in the random number generator can be exploited
(including some historical examples). I will outline some important properties
that any cryptographic random number generator needs. Finally, I will give an
example of aa widely used
non-linear pseudo random number generator, Blum Blum Shub.

The
setting for these talks is quite informal as we are all non-experts. We aim to spark a good discussion on an
interesting topic, so all are invited to attend. If you would like to contribute or have any
