Quasicrystals: diffraction and shape

I shall talk about two aspects of quasicrystals of physical significance. The first is diffraction, which can be approached theoretically via the "cut and project" construction and Fourier transforms. I shall compare and contrast the diffraction patterns of crystals and quasicrystals and mention some non- quasicrystal structures that have quasicrystal- type diffraction. The second aspect is the existence of dense layers of atoms which can be expected to contribute to surface shape. I shall describe recent work on the existence of such layers and calculations of their densities and discuss how it fits with the physical evidence.
