First, some general aspects of quantum field theory, like charged states and superselection sectors, are shortly discussed. Next, a programme for investigating observable algebras of gauge theories on the lattice (within the Hamiltonian approach) is proposed. Then, the observable algebras of scalar and spinorial QED on the lattice are characterized as $C^*$-algebras, generated by a set of gauge-invariant elements satisfying the Gauss law and some additional relations. The irreducible representations of these algebras can be classificied, leading to a decomposition of the physical Hilbert space into charge superselection sectors. Finally, comments on QCD are made.
All interested are invited to attend.
