String Theory has had, and continues to have, a profound impact on many areas of mathematics and vice versa. In this talk I will give a brief overview of String Theory and discuss some of the recent advances such as (i) the holographic principle (also known as the AdS-CFT correspondence), (ii) the microscopic origin of the Bekenstein-Hawking black hole entropy, and (iii) the emergence of noncommutative geometry as a candidate for the (quantum) geometry of spacetime. Particular emphasis will be given to the mathematical challenges posed by the quest for the definitive formulation of String Theory.
All interested are invited to attend.
