3. Reports: President's, Treasurer's and Auditor's Reports were submitted.

   • President's Report:

     The most important happening on this year's CMSA horizon was the medal we presented to Anne Street this week. We felt that it was important to honour Anne's achievements and contributions to combinatorics in Australasia and the awarding of a special medal was felt to be the most appropriate way to achieve this. Details of this will be circulated for discussion once Council has agreed on a proposed structure.

     During the year a considerable amount of time was spent on the production of a new logo. This has now been finalised. I would like to thank Brendan McKay and Ian Roberts for the amount of work thay put into this project. I also want to thank Clare Roberts for supplying us with several designs from which the final logo was chosen.

     Next week the first combined Australian Mathematical Society/American Mathematical Society meeting takes place in Melbourne. The CMSA was invited to organise a combinatorial stream of talks at this conference and this has been organised. I am particularly grateful to Kathy Horadam for taking the leading role in this enterprise. As the person "on the ground" in Melbourne she has been responsible for most of the work involved. Giving support were Bob Blakley and Ian Roberts. I would like to thank them all on behalf of the CMSA for being involved in this initiative.

     In the last year, we have made an attempt to collect maths books to send to Laos. They are in need of textbooks across the mathematical spectrum. Unfortunately we have not been able to arrange transport of books from Australia or New Zealand to Laos. None of the major carriers is able to take the books for us free of charge. If anyone has any contacts with airlines, diplomats or politicians that will enable us to surmount the postage problem we would be grateful to hear from you.

     Finally, I would like to thank Helen Gustafson, our Secretary, for her contribution to the CMSA. Without her efficient work and initiative we would have come to a full stop. I am extremely grateful for all she has done for us and for me over the last year.

   • Treasurer's Report: The secretary, H. Gustafson, presented the Treasurer's report in his absence. The report had been checked by the Auditors, Sheppard and Associates, and a copy of the financial report is enclosed.
   • Auditors Report: A copy of the letter from the auditor, P.J. Jorgensen of Sheppard and Associates is enclosed.

   Motion: That the treasurer's report be accepted (J. Seberry/E. Billington). Motion carried.

   J. Seberry recommended that a copy of the Treasurers/Auditors report be sent to the Australian Academy of Science.

   Motion: That the Auditor's report be adopted. (J. Seberry/E. Billington). Motion carried.

5. Appointment of Auditor
   Motion: Appoint Peter Jorgensen as auditor for 2000.(H.Gustafson/D.Street) - motion carried.

6. Logo: The logo is now completed and is to be used on the CMSA webpage and the Life Membership Certificate.
7. Financial Status of the Australasian Journal of Combinatorics: A. Street informed members that the AJC is a publication of the University of Queensland (not the CMSA(Inc.)). The AJC is not faring very well: people send money to the University of Queensland and there is a high cost in searching for the money; also publication costs are high at UQ. A. Street is searching for alternatives and will seek advice from our solicitor, Chris McKelvey, on withdrawing from the UQ publisher. We may need to increase the price slightly, and should increase the price to libraries.

   Anne invited members to submit papers to the AJC and will send out an email about submissions.

   The meeting voted that the AJC should become a CMSA(Inc.) publication by a show of hands.

8. Certificate of Life Membership: No further comments than what was mentioned earlier in Item 6.
9. Request from Editor of Discrete Maths: Peter Hammer had invited K. Horadam and I. Roberts to be editors of a Special Issue of Discrete Maths. The CMSA(Inc.) Council has declined this offer because of their commitment to the AJC. A motion was passed at today's Council meeting. J. Seberry expressed gratitude and thanks to those members who work so hard for the AJC, which is a highly regarded journal. Members supported with acclamation.

   Motion: K. Horadam could talk to P. Hammer about a Special Issue based on the combined AMS/AustMS conference in Melbourne. (I.Roberts/L.Batten)

   I. Roberts presented K.Horadam's reasons for supporting P. Hammers' offer:

   • Exposure of this kind adds to the focus on Australia as a strong and vigorous combinatorial region already provided by CMSA and Australasian Journal of Combinatorics.
   • Whilst there may be precedent for the ACCMCC papers going preferentially to the AJC, in Melbourne the Special session is part of the joint meeting of the Australian Mathematical Society and the American Mathematical Society. Whilst CMSA is a sponsor of the session, the Special session is not a "CMSA Conference".
   • The overlap in speakers between the two conferences is minimal, as far as she can determine, so there is likely to be sufficient work of value for the publication of volume in both journals.

   I. Roberts commented that there should be 22 papers, and not all from Australia.
   Other comments from the meeting:

   • L. Batten stated that it was important for North America to get a sense of combinatorics in other parts of the world, yet there may not be enough Australian papers.
   • J. Seberry recalled a previous occasion when many papers were sent to R. Stanton, yet two-thirds were not accepted. She is not sure of the importance of "Special Issues" in libraries - work may be lost. We have benefited from R. Stanton and A. Street's foresight in setting up the AJC.
   • A. Street indicated her concern of what may happen if Discrete Maths moves in on the AJC.

   Motion was presented and lost.

   Secretary to look into adding other groups (e.g. libraries) to the email list.

10. Further Business:

    • Fees:
      Motion: We maintain an annual fee of $10 and Life Membership of $120 (J.Seberry/A. Street). Motion carried.

    • 25ACCMCC: D. Holton has asked Mike Steel and Charles Semple to organise the 2000 conference at the University of Canterbury, in Christchurch NZ, at the end of November. It is easier to hold in Christchurch and to arrange accommodation at that time of the year. D. Holton thanked the members for their willinges to hold the conference at the University of Canterbury.
    • 2001 Conference: L. Caccetta stated that this will be held in Western Australia in July or September
    • Newsletter: Comment that CMSA needs a regular newsletter - which could be copied to the webpage. E. Billington offered to send out a newsletter every three months. Members to email information to her.
