(4) Council’s Report

Paul Bonnington made the following report.

The council met three times during 2005: April, August and December (@30ACCMCC). Most of the
business centered around planning for 30ACCMCC and 31ACCMCC (at Alice Springs). A highlight
for the year was the nomination received for Prof Derek Holton to be awarded the CMSA Medal for
2005, which was passed unanimously by the council at its April meeting. The previous (and first)
CMSA Medal award was to Prof Anne Street in 1999. Membership for the CMSA for 2005 is slightly
over 200, with 83 of those life members. Two honorary life memberships for Prof Ed Dawson and
Dr Helen Gustafson (announced at the 2004 AGM) will be awarded at the 30ACCMCC Conference
Dinner. The Australasian Journal of Combinatorics continues to grow in many respects, and has
recently moved to publishing 3 volumes per year. The submissions and rejection rate have also
both grown, and Catherine Greenhill and Diana Combe both join the Editorial staff as managing
editors (Charles Little is taking 15 months leave). A recent innovation is that all authors are supplied a
PDF file of their paper exactly as it appears in the journal to be used for reprints. Paul thanked all the
council members for their contributions and assistance during the year.

(5) Treasurer’s Report.

The Financial Report (as at 30 June 2005) was presented by Peter Adams, the Treasurer. A brief

discussion took place.

Eight Mile Plains 4113 was appointed auditor for the coming year.

(8) CMSA Council Elections Nominations Committee.

A motion was passed that a committee consisting of at least one council member and at least

one non-council member be formed each year to organise nominations for council. (This

supersedes a motion passed at the 2000 AGM on the makeup of the elections nominations committee.)

(9) Other Business.

(9.1) Ian Wanless reported the following regarding organization of 31ACCMCC.

31ACCMCC Saturday 8th July - Wednesday 12th July 2006 Alice Springs.

Followed by:

·        Part 2: Sunday 16th - Wednesday 19th Kings Canyon.

The conference websites can be accessed through

http://www.cdu.edu.au/engineering/31ACCMCC.html

Invited speakers include:

·        Sergei Bezrukov - University of Wisconsin

·        Charlie Colbourn - Arizona State University

·        Billy Duckworth - Australian National University

·        Gyula O. H. Katona - Renyi Institute

·        Barbara Maenhaut - University of Queensland

·        Gary Mullen - Penn State University

·        Gordon Royle - University of Western Australia

The locations are prime tourists locations so cheap airfares, and getting airfares at all will

become difficult as time passes. Hence we encourage people to book early. Venue for

31ACCMCC is Voyages resort in "downtown" Alice Springs. There are numerous

backpackers places nearby, for those on a budget. It is anticipated that there will be an

organised programme of activities for spouses and families, as many might like to take

this opportunity to see central Australia.

(9.2)

Ian Wanless reported that he have been contacted by Barry Hughes concerning a possible

submission (or other input) to the National Strategic Review of Mathematical Sciences

Research in Australia.

Ian agreed to consult members and make a submission representing the views of the society.

(10) Close of Meeting.

The meeting closed at 5:01pm.
