Here is a set of slides about a suite of programs called ADVISE. They act as an interface between a workstation and a high performance computer. The workstation looks after graphics and the computer does the number crunching. ADVISE allows separate development of the graphics software and the number crunching. This makes life much easier for the users and the developers for each only has to be conderned about getting his side of things right.
